InSinkErator Badger 5 Review

Insinkerator Badger 5 waste disposer

The InSinkErator Badger 5 is a compact 1/2 HP waste disposer. Despite being relatively small it has no trouble grinding all normal food waste. Compared with the garbage disposals in InSinkErator’s Evolution series, the Badger 5 is very cheap. But compared with 1/2 HP disposers from other vendors, the Badger 5 is relatively expensive.

The Badger 5 is easy to install, it uses a three-bolt Quick Lock sink mount made of stainless steel. Note that no power cord is included, you need to buy one or use an old cord. For being a 1/2 HP disposer, the Badger 5 is fast and efficient.

One small problem with the Badger 5 is that it is relatively loud, a modern, small 0.5 HP waste disposer should be quieter.

A much bigger problem is that a lot of owners have reported problems with leaking units. Of course, far from all Badger 5 disposers are leaking but the number of complaints is much higher than one would expect for a quality garbage disposal. Unlike the more expensive garbage disposers in the Evolution series, the case of the Badger 5 is made of plastic. According to several customers, the case has cracked after a while. You may want to write down the serial number of your unit before you install it. Without the serial number you may have trouble getting help from InSinkErator, if the unit would fail or start to leak.

According to InSinkErator, average water usage is about one gallon per person and day, the average electrical usage is 3-4 KWh per year.

The InSinkErator Badger 5 is backed by a two-year in-home warranty. The Badger 5 has a dishwasher drain connection.

The following is included in the box, Badger 5 food waste disposer, Quick Lock sink mount, sink baffle, Jam-Buster wrench, plastic sink stopper, and installation instructions.

What the Customers Say About the InSinkErator Badger 5 Waste Disposer
The customers have given the Badger 5 an average rating of 4.2 out of 5. The reviews can be divided into two main groups, one group giving it four or five stars and the other group giving it one or two stars. Why such a big difference? Simple, the people who have got a unit which has started to leak have given it a low rating. Most of them who have not had any big problems have given it four or five stars.

As long as the Badger 5 does not start to leak, it is a good garbage disposer. Some owners thought that it was a little bit loud but also fast and efficient. Fortunately, it looks like the problems with leaks have become less common over the years.

Here are two customer comments:

“If it was quieter, which I knew it wasn’t, I would have given it 5 stars. Good quality and installs in minutes. FYI, this was for an apartment unit. I really like it because of the size. It takes up little room under the sink.”

“After a leak started, I found a rusted crack in the side of the disposal. It was just out of warranty, just a little over a year old, so I had to replace it. When looking into the warranty at Lowes, the guy who I spoke to said that they had had several complaints of this same thing.”

InSinkErator Badger 5 Waste Disposer Review Summary

The Badger 5 is a fast and efficient garbage disposer, as long as it is working. Unfortunately, a lot of customers have reported broken or leaking units. In many cases, it has taken longer than two years before the problem appeared which means that the warranty is no longer valid. But a modern garbage disposal should work for several years without any problems. Given the many reported problems, we can’t recommend the Badger 5. If you want a good InSinkErator garbage disposal, the Evolution Compact is a safer choice but it is larger and more expensive than the Badger 5.
